Three Mediterranean islands, more than 60 businesses and one common message: sustainability and taste can go hand in hand.
On 5 October 2026, the EU-funded MESA project โ Mediterranean Islands for Sustainable Agriculture was presented to journalists and food-sector professionals in Berlin, marking another important milestone in three years of activities promoting sustainable agri-food products from Crete, Sardinia and Mallorca on the German market.
The project brings together INSULEUR and three of its member Chambers – the Heraklion Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Chamber of Commerce of Cagliari-Oristano, and the Mallorca Chamber of Commerce – reinforcing cooperation between EU island business communities and promoting the quality and sustainability of their local agri-food sectors.
During the MESA Press Conference in Berlin, INSULEUR representatives George Asonitis and Sofia Sotiriou presented the project’s journey, achievements and contribution to raising awareness of sustainable island agriculture, European quality products, climate and environmental protection, and animal welfare.
The event continued with masterclasses, tastings and B2B activities, bringing together professionals and products from more than 60 participating businesses from Crete, Sardinia and Mallorca and creating opportunities for direct exchange with the German market.
From INTERNORGA and Munich in 2024, to ANUGA in 2025, BIOFACH and finally Berlin in 2026, MESA has worked to increase the visibility of sustainable EU islands products and create concrete connections between Mediterranean producers and German food-sector professionals.
For Europe’s islands, sustainable agriculture is not only about producing high-quality food. It can contribute to protecting the environment and natural resources, supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation, promoting animal welfare and strengthening the competitiveness and resilience of island producers and local economies.
Three islands. One common message: sustainability and taste can go together!
Through MESA, INSULEUR and its partner Chambers continue to bring sustainable European island products closer to consumers and professionals, while highlighting the distinctive quality, identity and value of Mediterranean island agriculture.
