The EU MESA – Mediterranean Islands for Sustainable Agriculture project was presented at BIOFACH, the world’s leading trade fair for organic food held in Nuremberg, Germany. With approximately 2,300 exhibitors from 94 countries and around 35,000 professional visitors from over 140 countries, the fair represents a major international platform for promoting environmentally responsible food systems and innovative agricultural practices.
Under the message “European Islands for Sustainable Agriculture,” the project highlighted the role of European islands in promoting sustainable agricultural practices and high-quality agri-food production. The project booth attracted numerous professional visitors, including importers, distributors, retailers, HORECA professionals and organic food specialists, who showed strong interest in sustainable products originating from European Mediterranean islands.
At the stand, the Chambers of Commerce of Rethymno (Crete), Cagliari–Oristano (Sardinia) and Mallorca presented sustainable agri-food products such as olive oil, olives and wine from their regions, demonstrating how island agriculture contributes to key European priorities such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity protection and animal welfare. Through product presentations, tastings and direct interaction with visitors, the project raised awareness of sustainable island production systems and promoted EU quality schemes such as PDO, PGI and organic certification, strengthening the visibility of European islands as models of sustainable agriculture.
Overall, participation in BIOFACH 2026 provided an excellent opportunity for the MESA Project to enhance visibility, strengthen international outreach, and promote the role of European island agriculture in the transition towards more sustainable food systems.
